Starting dose 10-30 g/day (15-45 mL/day of oral solution); maintenance dose 10-20 g/day (15-30 mL/day) - As directed, titrated to comfortable soft stools
(For constipation: children 7-14 years, 10 g (15 mL) starting, 7-10 g (10-15 mL) maintenance; children 1-6 years, 3-7 g (5-10 mL); infants under 1 year, 3 g (up to 5 mL).)

Stool softener/osmotic laxative to reduce straining and pain on defecation while an underlying cause (fissure, haemorrhoids, spasm) is examined for and treated.
- Not a treatment for the underlying cause of anal pain (fissure, haemorrhoids, abscess, malignancy) - it only softens stool to reduce pain on defecation; the cause still needs to be examined for.
- Can cause bloating and flatulence, especially at the start of treatment.
- Refer urgently for rectal bleeding, a palpable mass, unexplained weight loss, fever, or pain not responding to conservative treatment.
