NO DRUG THERAPY IN PRIMARY CARE (REFERRAL & ADVICE)

1st line
Adult dose and duration

A patient worried about an eye condition without (yet) having a proven diagnosis. The GP's role is a focused history and exam, reassurance or explanation, and referral only if something is actually found — there is nothing to prescribe for the worry itself. - Refer, with advice

Paediatric dose

Children follow the same pathway: recognise and refer. No primary-care medicine is implied.

Dose source

No dose - referral pathway, no medicine given in primary care

Why

A patient worried about an eye condition without (yet) having a proven diagnosis. The GP's role is a focused history and exam, reassurance or explanation, and referral only if something is actually found — there is nothing to prescribe for the worry itself.

Cautions
  • RED FLAG - Sudden painless loss of vision, curtain falling, or new shower of floaters/flashes (retinal detachment / retinal vascular occlusion): assess urgently and refer.
  • RED FLAG - Acute severe eye pain with fixed mid-dilated pupil, cloudy cornea, and halo vision (acute angle-closure glaucoma): assess urgently and refer.
  • No medicine is prescribed for this in primary care - this entry is for recognition and referral. Anything given is decided by the service it is referred to.
  • RED FLAG - Any real visual symptom or examination finding uncovered during assessment must be worked up on its own merits, not dismissed as anxiety.
