Why

Propranolol is a non-selective beta-blocker that dampens excess sympathetic drive to the heart, easing symptomatic palpitations once dangerous causes have been excluded; it controls the symptom rather than treating an underlying arrhythmia.

Cautions
  • MANDATORY to exclude red flags (syncope, chest pain, family history of sudden death, structural heart disease) before symptomatic therapy.
  • CONTRAINDICATED in asthma/bronchospasm, severe COPD, second- or third-degree heart block, severe bradycardia, and cardiogenic shock.
  • Address lifestyle triggers (reduce caffeine, energy drinks, nicotine, alcohol) and reassure regarding benign palpitations.
